Roxy celebrates the work of British filmmaker Ben Wheatley with a double-bill screening of the recent hit thriller Kill List plus his debut feature, the critically acclaimed Down Terrace. Actor Michael Smiley, who stars in both films and won the Best Supporting Actor award at the British Independent Film Awards for his role in Kill List will also be present to introduce both films.
In 2009 after directing a number of shorts and television programmes, Wheatley directed his first feature film, the low-budget comedy thriller Down Terrace. Set almost entirely in a cramped Brighton flat, the film follows a crime family as they try to unmask a police informant in their midst.
The film came out to a limited release but great critical reception with Danny Leigh voting it his Film 2010 film of the year and the Independent making it their British Film of the Year, before Wheatley was awarded Most Promising Newcomer at the Evening Standard British Film Awards.
Wheatley’s follow-up, the hitman thriller Kill List, has gone on to be a critical and commercial success, called “…the best British Horror film in years” Total Film and “A cult classic in the making” Clash.
